OUR PROGRAMS
HOME VISITING VOLUNTEER PROGRAM
Sometimes, the most meaningful support comes from a friendly face and a caring presence. Our Home Visiting Volunteer Program connects you with a trained volunteer for companionship, conversation and comfort. Each visit is about creating meaningful moments in ways that feel right for you.
Ready for your match?
To be matched with a Home Visiting Volunteer, please call our Home Visiting Hub. They’ll set up an introductory visit with one of our volunteers so you can get to know each other. If the match feels right for both of you, your weekly visits can begin.

What Our Volunteers Can Offer
Volunteer visits typically happen once a week for 2–4 hours. Every visit is a little different, but volunteers can offer:
- Time for rest and renewal so a caregiver can take a break.
- Social connection through conversation, shared activities or quiet companionship.
- Emotional and spiritual support, listening openly and respectfully.
- A calm and compassionate presence near the end of life.
Understanding Anticipatory Grief
Knowing someone’s death is approaching can bring up a mix of emotions, like sadness, anger, worry or even guilt. Some people also notice changes in sleep, appetite or energy. Anticipatory grief is a natural response, and while it can be painful and overwhelming, it can also help you process and prepare for what’s ahead.
Anticipatory grief, like grief after death, is unique to everyone. There is no “right” way to feel, and you don’t have to figure it out alone.
Grief Support and Spiritual Care
Pilgrims Hospice Society also offers one-on-one grief support and spiritual care to our Home Visiting Hub clients and families.
- Grief Support provides space to navigate anticipatory grief, cope with emotions, and feel supported through change.
- Spiritual Care offers comfort, connection and meaning through faith, personal beliefs or quiet reflection. Spiritual care is available to people of all faiths.
These services are currently only available by phone for our Home Visiting Hub clients and families. Please contact Pilgrims’ Care Navigator (alannap@pilgrimshospice.com or 825-467-8599) for a referral to our grief support.
Death Matters
Death Matters is an anticipatory grief support program at Pilgrims Hospice Society for the family, friends and caregivers of our hospice residents and Home Visiting Hub clients.
Death Matters: Support for Caregivers meets on two Wednesday evenings each month.
- One night focuses on end-of-life education with topics like death rituals around the world, balancing relationships and managing stress.
- The other night focuses on Care for the Caregiver, where we’ll share tips and strategies for balancing your well-being with the demands of caring for someone with a life-limiting illness.
Death Matters: Coffee Talk meets every Friday morning for casual, supportive conversation. No set topic, just a chance to connect with others who understand.
UPCOMING DEATH MATTER EVENTS
DATES TBD:
