Admission to the Roozen Family Hospice Centre

Thank you for considering Pilgrims Hospice Society for your loved one. We enhance the lives of those with progressive, life-threatening illnesses and provide their families, friends and caregivers with the support they need.

Our programs have been a pillar of compassion in greater Edmonton for the past 30 years. Our strategic vision has always been to provide residential hospice care for those at the end of life who can no longer stay at home but do not need to be in a hospital or long-term care facility. We realized this vision in 2021 with the opening of our Roozen Family Hospice Centre, Edmonton’s first free-standing residential community hospice. In addition to 12 residential hospice palliative suites, we offer all of our end-of-life and grief support programs from this beautiful, purpose-built building.

Pilgrims Hospice Society is a welcoming, relaxed, family-friendly place that enables residents and their loved ones to share meaningful memories during life’s precious last months, weeks and days.

Admission Process

Referral and admission to the Roozen Family Hospice Centre is managed by Alberta Health Services. Their palliative consultation team will complete an assessment of your loved one (at home or in a healthcare setting) and add them to the list of individuals waiting for hospice care. You may indicate your preference for placement with Pilgrims Hospice Society as part of this process.

Our Care Navigator will be happy to answer any questions you have about Pilgrims Hospice Society, arrange a tour of our hospice, or help you with the referral process. Choosing end-of-life care for your loved one is an important decision and we’re here to help.

Staying at the Roozen Family Hospice Centre is free of charge.

The costs for accommodation, all meals and nursing care are covered for our residents. There may be some costs for medication and oxygen that are the responsibility of the resident and their family, but these should be minimal.

Medication

All residents of our hospice are registered with Palliative Blue Cross, a free benefit program which covers most, if not all, of a resident’s medication costs. Residents over the age of 65 will also have partial coverage under Senior’s Blue Cross. For safety reasons, all medications at the Roozen Family Hospice Centre come from CareRX Pharmacy.

Oxygen

Hospice residents who benefit from oxygen but do not meet the criteria for coverage through Alberta Health may incur a fee for the service.

There are two main criteria for admission to hospice care:

  1. That your loved one is dealing with a life-threatening progressive illness with an estimated prognosis of three months or less.
  2. That your loved one is not interested in pursuing any tests or treatments for the sole purpose of lengthening or shortening their life (C1 or C2 goals of care).

Please indicate your preference for Pilgrims Hospice Society during your loved one’s assessment for hospice care with Alberta Health Services.
