ADMISSION TO ROOZEN FAMILY HOSPICE CENTRE

Thank you for considering Pilgrims Hospice Society to meet your loved ones needs. Pilgrims Hospice Society works to enhance the lives of those with progressive, life-threatening illnesses and supports their families, friends and caregivers. While Pilgrims Hospice Society’s programs have been a pillar of compassion in greater Edmonton for over two decades, the strategic vision has always been to include residential hospice care for those at the end-of-life, who can no longer stay at home but do not need to be in a hospital or long-term care facility. Edmonton’s first free-standing residential community hospice offers all of Pilgrims Hospice Society’s end-of-life and grief support programs, in addition to 12 residential hospice palliative suites all under the roof of a beautiful new purpose-built building.

Admission Process

The admission process into your loved one’s new home starts with our staff taking some basic information including their Alberta Health Care Number, their main contact information, and your contact information (if different).

After we collect this basic information, our Care Navigator will contact your loved one’s main contact to answer any questions and arrange a tour of the home if desired. The Medical Director and Director of Residential Care assess if we can meet the care needs of your loved one.

The main criteria for admission is that your loved one is dealing with a life-threatening progressive illness with an estimated prognosis of 3 months or less. One other criteria for admission is that your loved one is not interested in pursuing any tests or treatments for the sole purpose of lengthening or shortening their life.

We are a welcoming, relaxed and family-friendly place that enables meaningful memories during life’s precious last months, weeks and days.

  1. A life-threatening progressive illness with an estimated prognosis of 3 months or less.
  2. Goals of Care Designation of C1 or C2 (no desire to pursue further tests or treatments for the sole purpose of lengthening or shortening life).

There is no fee to stay at the Roozen Family Hospice Centre.

Meals:
Meals and nursing care is provided to residents and funded by charitable donations.

Medication:
Resident families may incur some costs related to medication, oxygen, and transport. Medication costs are exactly the same as they would be if the resident were at home. All medications in this home come from Rite Choice Pharmacy – this is required for safety reasons. Residents who are over age 65 will be partially covered by Senior’s Blue Cross. Everyone at Hospice is registered with Palliative Blue Cross Coverage, which covers most, if not all, of the medication costs.

Medigas:
Medigas supplies our home with oxygen supplies and those who benefit from oxygen but do not meet criteria for coverage through Alberta Health may incur a cost.

Transportation:
Transportation to hospice is arranged with the Care Navigator on admission. Some ambulance fees are covered by Palliative Blue Cross.  The Care Navigator will review transportation options with you as needed to ensure the safe arrival of your loved one.

Contact us! We will take some basic information and our Care Navigator will follow up to answer your questions and arrange a tour if desired. Priority will be given to those in the most urgent need.
